High hopes have been set on the shoulders of “Son of a Legend” Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. by Tijuana mayor Jorge Ramos as he expects that world class professional boxing will help clean up the image of Tijuana in the eyes of the world on the March 28th PPV fight card dubbed as “Latin Fury 8-Tijuana Thunder”.
“We are very happy at the possibility of having all these fighters there. Tijuana is good for to everybody. It has seen some toug times but we are fighting, really fighting,” Ramos stated. “I am very proud because champions are coming to Tijuana to make history, a city that is used to making history like Julio Cesar Chavez Sr. did and now his son will and all the fighters who are doing me the favor of fighting in Tijuana.”
Chavez Jr. is slated to face twenty four year old undefeated Luciano Cuello (23-0, 10KO) of Argentina.
This will mark Chavez Jr. first fight in 2009 after defeating Matt Vanda with a unanimous decision last November in their rematch.
“I lot of people get impatient, they would like to see me face a world champion
or fighters who are more known, at the same time I get impatient as well,” Chavez Jr. said. “I would like to fight for a world title but I have my team and I only follow orders. If De La Hoya wants to fight me, well, here I am.”
Top Rank’s Bob Arum also confirmed yesterday in Los Angeles, CA, that two time WBC lightweight champion Jose Luis Castillo (58-8-1, 49KO) will be facing the former WBO welterweight champion Antonio Diaz (45-5-1, 20KO) at a catch weight of 143 pounds.
“I am determined to be on the front pages once again but not at welterweight. I know that Diaz it will be a great fight. He is an opponent that is going to bring out the best of me and that motivates me, I will win and my next fight will be at 140 lbs,” Castillo stated.
Diaz is the older brother of Julio “Kidd” Diaz, the former two time IBF lightweight champion who challenged Castillo for his then WBC strap.
Jose Luis will be training in the mountains that surround Mexico City for four months and then he will travel to the border city to finalize his training.
“I will show that there is Castillo for a while, I have the support of Fernando Beltran, Zanfer and Top Rank and I feel very motivated. This year I will return to the top and I will be champion at junior welterweight,” Castillo said confidently.
With a win on March 28th, Castillo mentioned that he has offers to face Kendall Holt or Mike Alvarado at the end of May at 140 lbs.
Arum also confimed the change of opponent for the current WBO super flyweight champion Fernando Montiel as he will now defend his title against the Argentinean Diego Silva (24-1, 12KO) instead of the original opponent that was announced, Eric Morel of Puerto Rico.
As far as for the newest addition to the card Giovanni Segura, it was confirmed that he will have the opportunity to avenge his only loss against Cesar Canchila of Columbia for the interim WBA junior flyweight title.
